For articles of the same name in other Tropico games, see Trait.

Traits are aspects of the presidente's history, abilities, and life. All traits give advantages, though some of them come with downsides as well.

In Tropico 3, each presidente gets two traits and two flaws.

In Tropico 4, each presidente gets three traits and flaws are removed from the game. All traits start out with 1 star each. When a game is won using a presidente with a particular trait, that trait will gain 1 to 3 stars depending on how well the game went, to a maximum of 5 stars. Each star improves the benefits a trait gives.

Traits

Activist

"You spent your youth at peaceful demonstrations, throwing rocks at government buildings and setting policemen on fire with Molotov cocktails. When there is protest, you are always there. It is kind of awkward when the protest is against your own regime, but you can't help it."

Administrator

"Your ideal world is one of structure and order. You take the greatest pleasure in organizing things. For example you constantly rearrange the furniture in your office until it's 'just right', or you straighten the towels in the bathroom until they hang evenly. Needless to say, you are rarely satisfied."

Alcoholic

"Your papa and your mama both like hitting the bottle way too often. Then they would hit each other. You followed their shining example and find consolation only when you are drenched in alcohol fumes. You have attended every single 'AA' meeting in Tropico, but you always come back to your one true passion. You're not sure anymore if you can't live without liquor, or if liquor can't live without you."

You swore an oath that you would rid this island of the evil that threatened the life of your favorite pet – El Toucan, the most magnificent bird in Tropico! Cheapskate

"Your grandfather was a Tropican urban legend. He greedily kept all his life savings in a dirty sock under his pillow, until one day his house burned to the ground and he lost everything. Now following the family tradition, your greatest pleasure is feeding your piggy bank with dimes. You also enjoy going out to a restaurant – if they offer complimentary bread and water. Coward

"Better live a coward than a brave, dead hero. You keep repeating such dull phrases ad nauseam, but you can't hid the stigma of that chicken heart of yours. People know that when push comes to shove, you'll just hide in disgrace. Because you run around screaming 'Oh God, oh God...' when you see a spider, you are considered very religious."

Diplomatic

"Diplomacy is the art of saying 'nice doggie' until you can find a rock. You actually don't have anything against violence, but you know that so much more can be achieved through negotiation and deception. As an ambassador, you're just an honest man sent abroad to lie for the well-being of Tropico. Supposedly, even Henry Kissinger learned the craft from you."

Years later you have only read Sun Tzu's Art of War but have become a killing machine. When others vie for your power, you watch them cheerfully through your rifle's optics."

Entrepreneurial

"You come from a big, but poor family. To support them all, you started your own business when you were just 15 years old. Gradually, you expanded it into a profitable Caribbean company. Now, your vast knowledge of world markets gives you a special edge when you need to sell Tropico's products at the best possible prices."

Whenever you see someone higher up in the hierarchy, you immediately appear out of thin air, turn on the moist, sheepish gaze and start your famous laugh that makes even hyenas cry. Your notorious servility, exuberant hymns of praise and rampant hyperbole would make even Narcissus blush."

Now, you can take back the power and do everything you can to prevent further damage to the Environment. You are ready to pursue your noble quest of defending the dream of a green paradise, even at the expense of having a thriving industry on Tropico."

Hardworking

"Your grandmother told yo that lazy people go to hell and, impressionable as you were, you did everything possible to escape an eternity in sulfur-smelling pits. Because of that, your life as a hardworking mule has been mostly blood, sweat, and tears. You always try to look busy, regardless of what it is that you're doing – or whether it's actually of any use to the good people of Tropico."

Incorruptible

"Your childhood hero was Elliot Ness. You have such strong convictions and principles, that people respect you and fear you at the same time. No amount of money or persuasion can sway you from your chosen path of upholding the law and seeking justice. Many have tried to corrupt that pure, proud heart of yours, but all they succeeded in doing was breaking their heads against the stone wall of our faith and your readiness to die for it."

Jingo

"To say you don't like foreigners is a mild, politically correct understatement. For you, an inbred xenophobe, it's enough when someone even mentions something remotely foreign for you to immediately burst into a litany of spiteful characterizations. You take great pride in the fact that you have offended 99.9% of the worlds populace. The only people spared from your wrath are Tropicans. When you ended up hating others and mostly yourself, it's their turn."

Kleptomaniac

"When you see something small and shiny, you can't help yourself – you must possess it... Recently, you started calling your treasures 'precioussss'. PR Specialist

"Citizens, remember, I always hold your best interests at heart. Do not trust the rebels! Do not believe foreign propaganda! Go to work instead! The Tropican economy needs your support! Do not go to protests – you waste valuable working time! Support the economy and brush your teeth regularly! Respect the government! Do not forget to vote! Vote with your heart! Vote El Presidente! God bless you all!"

"You see a vast, Byzantine conspiracy everywhere. You know for a fact that Freemasons and Martians are to blame for every misfortune on our poor planet. Whenever you look around, you always see yourself surrounded by enemies."

Patriot

"You come from a well-known family of Caribbean freedom fighters. They all shed their blood for the liberation of Tropico from the foreign yoke. Now it's your turn to show the world that although your country is small, your beliefs are grand and your cause is just. You promised to represent the interests of the common Tropican against the wealthy power elite. Your rhetoric is spiced with full-blown phrases like 'justice', 'real reforms', and 'change' – but you're no different than the next demagogue. But on the way there your ship was attacked by the infamous ghost ship The Flying Llama and suffered heavy damage. you thought that this was the end for you and your crew but then you saw the bird of good portent – the toucan!
