Happiness determines how happy pirates are overall. It is controlled by various factors, such as the amount of defense and anarchy they are subjected to, as well as their levels of drinking, feasting, gambling, resting, stashing, and wenching.

Keeping pirates happy is important since, if their satisfaction levels get too low, pirates may attack other people on the island and if they have both high courage and leadership may even lead a pirate revolt. The only way to prevent a pirate revolt, other than fulfilling their needs, is to assassinate the disgruntled pirate.
