Tropico Wiki

The Armed Forces of Tropico compromises the military and internal security organization responsible for the protection of Tropico and its citizens. It is controlled by the President of the republic and the Chief-of-Staff.

The existence of the Tropican Military goes as far back as late Colonial Times when Tropico was a small colony of a European Monarchy. At first, the small settlement was almost devoid of any military presence, with its only exception being the Palace Guard.

As the early city grew exponentially in a relatively short timespan, revolutionary sentiments began erupting around the territory, with one of its demands being the presence of a native military loyal to the colony. This, along with the looming threat of Pirate Raiders due to Tropico's new wealth, edged the Governor into pressing forward with the development of designs for fortifications to build around the island.

The constant necessity to explore all the unknown territory led to the creation of the colonial Ranger Corps, an elite infantry division with its biggest purpose being exploration.

During the later years of Tropico as a colony, the first attempts at mustering a professional army were already accomplished, with watchtowers placed in strategic places and forts erected to garrison the new colonial army.

These efforts proved to be so successful that, in addition to effectively repelling any pirate threat, it also defended against any military retaliation of the Crown against Tropico's declaration of independence.

These events ended up being Tropico's first Baptism by Fire.

In the early 20th century, Tropico's High Authorities decided to invest in modernizing the Tropican military, as it was becoming severely outdated with its mid-19th-century technology.

During this time Tropico took advantage of its contacts with certain foreign powers to buy technologies for the modernization of its army. Army barracks started replacing the dated forts, using a lot less space while hosting the same quantity of soldiers, and using American-developed logistics. Enormous German-inspired concrete fortifications were erected in any important defensible position (like the beaches), along with repurposing the ancient guard towers with machine-gun placements. It is worth noting that the Government also invested in the creation of a Commando Unit for more Covert Operations. Its current base is said to be in the Palace. Some years later designs for Military Bases were developed, along with the acquisition of new soviet technologies for the manufacturing of Mk-I tanks (the Tropican variant of the T-34), the new armoured branch of the Army.

After this, Tropico counted with modernized equipment for its guard towers, strong fortifications for massive firepower, modern soldiers and a brand new armoured sector to support the infantry. This expansion and modernization came in time to meet its Baptism by Fire against Tropico's first subversive groups, which would continue to attempt attacks at production, industry or military installations to destabilize the Dynasty in power to this day.

This modernization proved to be effective enough to successfully defend the territory against any invasion from any foreign power.

After the fall of the Third Reich, the Government started pushing for further innovation. Some new developments were the modernization of the Armored Branch, with the replacement of the ageing Mk-I tanks to the Mk-II tanks with Reactive Armour, and the incorporation of Armoured Personnel Carriers, an effective anti-infantry measure. All of this so far was in courtesy of Soviet contacts. The Commando Corps was also expanded with the creation of the Defence Headquarters (more commonly known as the Hexagon), which are the current headquarters of the Tropican Armed Forces. The Ranger Corps, up until now a forgotten branch of the Army, was finally modernized and incorporated into the Commandos, bearing its grey uniforms.

Later on, the country successfully secured the development of its own Navy, with technologies bought both from the United States and the Soviet Union. An American Nimitz-class Aircraft Carrier with Soviet MiG-21s and a Soviet Akula-class Nuclear Submarine constitute all the Navy Tropico has to offer up to this day. A remarkable trait of the Navy is its complete and unwavering loyalty towards the ruling dynasty, unlike the Army, where officers may conspire against them.

In later years, advancements on national sciences and engineering made possible the development of the Tropican Space Program with the help of soviet technology, like the use of Soyuz rockets, aimed with space exploration and provide its own medium of satellite launches inside the country. Along with the Space Program secret development of Nuclear technology was ongoing, culminating with the construction of the Nuclear Program. This program was not well-received within the foreign powers, but nonetheless it ended up being useful as a deterrent against any foreign invasion.

After the dissolution of the Soviet Union, activity inside the Armed Forces slowed down somewhat, with its only ongoing conflicts being with Rebel Subversives and its only remarkable advancements being the modernization of the Infantry with new American logistics, the creation of the elite Special Forces for the Defence Headquarters and the development of a Secret Giant Laser, its intended use classified.

Both the Army and the Navy are under the direct authority of El Presidente, with Chief of Staff General Penultimo playing the part of the general deployment of the forces in case they are needed.

Minor Generals may play important roles being assigned to individual squads, making them more effective in battle. Tacticians may also play important roles to help with the defence of important structures.

Military Doctrine

The Military doctrine that reigns in the Armed Forces is directly tied to the Legitimate Constitution of Tropico.

During its history, varying islands of Tropico have used different doctrines to define the Army. There were times where Conscription was the norm to raise and train an army in more accessible means (due to no education being necessary). Also, Militias would be used as the main means of defence when the development of a full-fledged military was not a viable investment. Finally, in more developed urban centres the practice of raising a Professional Army was the norm, where a well-trained, well-armed military composed of educated volunteers with military careers in mind was possible.

It is worth noting that, during Colonial Tropico, its military doctrine was vastly different from the rest of the world. The Gentleman's War doctrine was completely disregarded in Tropican territory. Soldiers were encouraged to always take cover, and fire, whenever possible, at enemy threats. Infantrymen almost never made any sort of formation, except in limited cases, where a squad would fire a volley of bullets in a line at first contact with an enemy squad.
